Most astrology systems assign universal meanings to planets: Jupiter is always benefic, Saturn is always difficult, Rahu is always unpredictable. The DammruVani method challenges this assumption at the root.
The Navtara system holds that every planet's meaning is individual. The same planet that is a supreme blessing for one person can be the greatest obstacle for another. It depends on a single thing: how far that planet's Nakshatra is counted from your birth Nakshatra.
How to Calculate the Navtara
Four-Step Process
- Find your Moon's exact degree in its sign. Which of the 27 Nakshatras covers that degree? That is your Janma Nakshatra.
- Note the lord of that Nakshatra. This becomes Navtara position 1 (Janma).
- Count forward in Vimshothari order: Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh. Assign each subsequent Nakshatra lord numbers 2 through 9.
- Find the Nakshatra of every planet in the chart (and the Lagna degree itself). Assign each its Navtara number and polarity.
The Nine Navtara Positions
| # | Name | Sanskrit | Polarity | Meaning | Planet Effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Janma | जन्म | Neutral | Birth, baseline | Context-dependent; read via chart aspects |
| 2 | Sampat | संपत | Positive | Wealth, prosperity | Delivers material abundance in its domain |
| 3 | Vipat | विपत | Negative | Adversity, obstacle | Recurring obstacles; efforts tend to get undone |
| 4 | Kshema | क्षेम | Positive | Protection, stability | Provides shelter; protects what is built |
| 5 | Pratyari | प्रत्यारि | Negative | Enemy, strife | Most emotionally taxing; intense friction and turbulence |
| 6 | Sadhak | साधक | Positive | Achiever, accomplishment | Rewards disciplined effort; spiritual accomplishment |
| 7 | Vadh | वध | Most Difficult | Obstruction, cessation | Things end abruptly; invisible forces block progress |
| 8 | Maitri | मैत्री | Positive | Friendly, cooperative | Allies arrive without asking; network expands organically |
| 9 | Ati-Maitri | अति-मैत्री | Most Auspicious | Greatest friend, universal flow | Maximum cooperation and success; efforts yield magnified results |
The Lagna Degree: The Most Important Point
99% of practitioners use the Lagna for sign and house lord analysis but never calculate the polarity of the Lagna degree's Nakshatra. In DammruVani, this is the first and most important calculation.
The Lagna Navtara Rule
- Ati-Maitri (9) Lagna: Life flows with unusual ease. The universe cooperates. Efforts yield magnified results.
- Sampat (2) Lagna: Material prosperity is a natural blessed channel in this lifetime.
- Sadhak (6) Lagna: Spiritual practice is essential; accomplishment through disciplined effort.
- Maitri (8) Lagna: People arrive to help naturally, without being asked.
- Vadh (7) Lagna: Most difficult. An invisible structural force works against almost every endeavour throughout life.
Quick Reference: Polarity Summary
| Polarity | Navtara Numbers | Strategic Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Positive | 2, 4, 6, 8, 9 | Planet is an asset. Work in its domain, activate it. |
| Negative | 3, 5, 7 | Planet is a liability. Apply Upaay; tread carefully in its domain. |
| Neutral | 1 | Planet is baseline. Results depend entirely on other chart factors. |
